A multi-cultural home

As a professional photographer, I consider myself extremely fortunate to photograph homes with unique interior design elements. When interior design is deeply personal to the homeowner is when the most inspiring designs come together.

To document a project by designers at Liquid Interiors, I photographed a beautiful newly renovated home reflecting the owner’s experiences living abroad. The style of Ms. Cao’s home was a nod to her cross-cultural perspectives, with inspiration coming from years spent in Spain, China, and the U.S.

The blending of cultures was reflected in details such as the kitchen tiles imported from Madrid, an ornate table set within the Chinese tea room, and an open kitchen based upon the feeling of community and informality in the States. Going through the rooms during the interior photoshoot, I felt like I was being transported through different phases of Ms. Cao’s life and getting a taste of different worlds.

Given all these disparate design elements, one might think the space feels confined or cluttered. Yet, the space feels contemporary, with an open concept design.

Behind-the-Scenes: Shooting Interior Design Photos

There was ample natural light streaming through the wide windows and terrace doors, though as the photographer I needed to fill in the light in backlit shots with a strobe with a softbox when shooting. Mostly I managed to shoot only with natural light, giving the images a soft, homey feeling.

I also enjoyed shooting through the arched Moorish doorways – they added another depth to the photographs, as their smooth shapes framed the shot in the foreground.

Thank you to Liquid Interiors for having me as the project photographer, and thank you to SCMP for the feature!
